Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection: What We Check

Clutchland TeamJanuary 15, 20266 min read

Buying a used vehicle is one of the biggest purchases most people make, and it's one of the riskiest if you don't know what you're looking at. A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) gives you an objective, professional assessment of the vehicle's condition before you commit. At Clutchland, we see this as one of the most valuable services we offer — we've saved Spokane buyers from expensive mistakes more times than we can count.

Engine and Drivetrain

We check compression, listen for internal noises (rod knock, valve tick, timing chain rattle), inspect for oil leaks, check the condition of the coolant and oil (milky oil or coolant can indicate a head gasket issue), and verify the engine runs smoothly at all RPM ranges. For manual transmission vehicles, we test clutch engagement, check for grinding or hard shifting, and assess the remaining clutch life. For automatics, we check fluid condition, shift quality, and torque converter operation.

Undercarriage and Suspension

This is especially important in Spokane. Road salt eats metal, and we check frame rails, subframes, control arms, and brake lines for rust-through or excessive corrosion. We inspect ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, shocks/struts, and bushings for wear. We check for signs of accident damage — bent frame members, misaligned panels, fresh undercoating hiding problems.

Brakes

We measure pad and rotor thickness, check for uneven wear patterns (which indicate caliper or hardware problems), inspect brake lines and hoses for cracking or corrosion, and test the parking brake. We also check ABS system operation if the vehicle is equipped.

Electrical and Electronics

We scan the vehicle's computer for stored diagnostic codes (even if no warning lights are on — some codes can be cleared but the underlying problem remains). We test the battery, charging system, and starter. We check all lights, power windows, locks, and verify the HVAC system works including A/C.

4x4 and AWD Systems

For trucks and SUVs, we verify the 4WD system engages and disengages properly, check the transfer case for leaks or noise, inspect the front differential, and test hub engagement. This is critical for Spokane buyers — many used trucks have neglected 4WD systems that can be expensive to repair.

Fluids and Maintenance History

We check all fluid levels and conditions. Dark, burnt transmission fluid is a red flag. Coolant that looks like rust water indicates neglected maintenance. We look for evidence of regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. If the seller has service records, we review them.

What We Report

You get a detailed report covering every system we inspect, rated as good condition, needs attention soon, or needs immediate repair. We estimate repair costs for any issues found so you can negotiate the purchase price or walk away informed. A PPI typically takes about an hour and costs a fraction of what a hidden problem would cost to fix after purchase.
