Wheel cylinders are the hydraulic actuators inside drum brakes that push the brake shoes outward against the drum when you press the pedal. These small but essential components contain pistons and rubber seals that wear over time, eventually allowing brake fluid to leak. A leaking wheel cylinder reduces braking force at that wheel and contaminates the brake shoes with fluid, requiring their replacement as well.
In Spokane's climate, wheel cylinders are particularly susceptible to corrosion and seal degradation. Moisture in aging brake fluid, combined with road salt exposure, causes pitting inside the cylinder bore and deterioration of the rubber piston seals. A telltale sign is brake fluid weeping inside the drum, visible as a wet spot on the backing plate or fluid dripping down the inside of the wheel.
At Clutch Auto Repair, we replace leaking wheel cylinders with new units and always install new brake shoes and hardware at the same time, since fluid-contaminated shoes cannot be reused safely. The system is bled, and we road test to confirm solid rear braking. Call (509) 487-0161 for a quote.
